I do not remember taking my first step, or my first bit of solid food, but I will never forget my first trip as a professional driver. I do not recall what day it was, probably a Saturday or a Sunday, and I took a drive downtown to test out the app. I was not sure what to expect. Who would my first ride be? What would the people be like? Would I be able to find them easily?
After driving around for a short time, the app pinged my first pickup. It was not that far away. I looked at the map and attempted to follow the directions. We'll just say that it was a learning curve and I ended up reading the map the wrong way. At that time, the map did not reorient itself.
As I tried to find where the rider was, I noticed that the pin was across the street. I looked over and there they were, a couple. I flipped around to pick them up and after verifying identities, they got in. They were dressed in black and had the most serious expressions. I try to make small talk when I can, but these were my first and I felt rather intimidated.
They informed me they were going to a funeral being held inside one of the casinos. It was only a few blocks away. We made the rest of the ride in silence.
